What this calculator does
Ideal weight is a range, not a single number. Clinical formulas estimate a reference weight from height and sex, while body frame, muscle and health status also matter.
This calculator compares four common formulas and shows the weight range corresponding to a BMI of 18.5–24.9. You can adjust the estimate for a small, medium or large frame.
Ideal weight formulas
Male: 50 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60) · Female: 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60) The Devine formula is the baseline; Robinson, Miller and Hamwi use different coefficients. The average is adjusted by up to five percent for body frame.

Frequently asked questions
Is ideal weight definitive?
No. The formulas are population averages and do not account for muscle mass, body fat, bone density or individual health.
Does body frame affect weight?
A broader frame and more muscle can support a higher healthy weight. The percentage adjustment is a rough approximation.
What is a healthy weight range?
The range for a BMI of 18.5–24.9 is considered healthy for adults. Waist circumference and metabolic markers should also be considered.
